3 people dead following solo vehicle crash into Merced County canal, CHP says
MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Three people are dead after an SUV overturned into a canal just west of Los Banos.
The crash happened just after 3 p.m. Thursday on Overland Avenue and H Street.
The California Highway Patrol says the SUV was traveling west on Overland and the driver missed the curve in the road, going into the canal and overturning.
Drivers and officers who were in the area already for a prior accident ran over to help. The bystanders were able to pull out the victims.
Two died at the scene, and another person died at the hospital.
Officers say a man in his 60's and two women from Los Banos were the ones killed in the crash. Their identities have not been released.
Overland Avenue and H Street have been closed by the CHP as the investigation continues.
