FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A local couple is preparing to open Fresno's first indoor dog park, aiming to provide a year-round space for pets and their owners to play regardless of weather conditions.
"The Dog Park," located on Blackstone Avenue near Shaw, is set to debut later this month.
Owner Kat Wojdan, alongside her service dog Bailey, says the project is designed to build a welcoming environment for the community.
"I have big plans for this place, it looks a little small and a little empty now, but all the best things start out that way," Wojdan said.
The 7,000-square-foot, air-conditioned facility offers an alternative to outdoor parks, particularly during Central Valley summers when heat can pose risks to pets. Entry will cost $10 per day.
Wojdan said the space will include a range of interactive features for dogs.
"I've got a ball pit. We're going to have a puppy rage room. I've got a swing for the dogs. We're building some climbing structures," she said.
Health concerns tied to extreme heat are one reason some owners are looking forward to the new option.
The ASPCA warns that hot pavement can quickly overheat dogs and burn their paw pads, with signs of distress including excessive panting, difficulty breathing and drooling.
"When it's really super hot out, I can't come out here. It's way too hot," said Angela, a local dog owner.
Safety concerns at traditional dog parks also influence interest in an indoor facility. Angela said she has experienced issues with aggressive dogs in public spaces.
"I worry about my dogs being attacked which has happened," she said.
Wojdan said her park will include safeguards aimed at creating a controlled environment.
Pet owners will be required to submit proof of vaccinations and complete a temperament check during their first visit.
Her interest in creating the facility stems from a long-standing passion for animal care, beginning with volunteer work at the SPCA and continuing through a career in animal sciences.
"I have a long history in veterinary and canine behavioral sciences. I switched to the human side about 22 years ago ... but I missed dogs, so when this opportunity presented itself, I just ... I couldn't, I couldn't resist it," Wojdan said.
In addition to daily play, Wojdan said she hopes the space will evolve into a hub for community events and gatherings.
"We are trying to build a community out here, and so everybody's voices are welcome. I have a suggestion box, and I hope that people use it to let us know what we can do better," she said.
The Dog Park is scheduled to hold its grand opening May 23 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
