FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno Irrigation District is marking the completion of the Carter Bybee Basin, a new project aimed at boosting groundwater supplies in the region.
The 35-acre groundwater recharge basin is designed to replenish the aquifer by about an additional 840 acre-feet each year.
District officials say the basin will strengthen the district's ongoing efforts to reduce groundwater pumping. By capturing surface water during wet years and storing it underground, the project aims to create a reliable reserve for use during periods of drought.
Funding for the project totaled approximately $6 million.
