CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two of the best wrestling teams in the country are separated by 10 square miles.
When they come together once a year for a dual meet, it's only fitting to call it "The Big One."
"It's the sport we're the best at in the Central Valley," says Buchanan wrestling coach Troy Tirapelle. "This is one of those where you can put us up against anyone anywhere and we can compete with them. I don't mean just Buchanan. I mean Clovis as well."
Buchanan and Clovis High have been responsible for 13 of the last 14 CIF state championships.
The Bears have the most recent success. The reigning champs are ranked first in the state and the nation this season.
Buchanan has one of the best in the 120 pound weight class. Rocklin Zinkin is still undefeated in every match of his senior year.
"His best thing is distancing himself from the competition when you're trying to be a top athlete and a top recruit," Tirapelle said said. "He's going to Oklahoma State next year, which is a storied wrestling program. You got to separate yourself from the high school wrestlers."
The Cougars have the winningest program in California with 13 state titles, but 12th-ranked Clovis is looking for their first championship since 2015.
At 113 pounds, Michael Bernabe is the best in California, and a guy Coach Gabe Schaefer is expecting to make a statement in the postseason.
"He (Michael) just loves the sport and he loves practicing everyday," Schaefer said.
Buchanan and Clovis coming together for "The Big One" shows that each year, the road to the top runs through the Central Valley.
