Hanford residents beat the heat at various locations, including 'The Plunge,' splash pads & more

HANFORD, Calif. (KFSN) -- As the warm temperatures continue to rise, people are finding ways to stay cool and safe.

In Hanford, there are a number of ways to cool off, including Splashpads at four local parks and the Longfield Center, which is used as a cooling location when needed.

One of the most popular spots in town is their community pool known as "The Plunge," where families can swim and kids can go down the water slide.

"It's just a great spot to cool down, it's great for families and for people to be able to spend time together, we have had a lot of big groups come this year, especially. And we have our private rentals for parties or they can rent the cabanas," explains Grace Gibson, who has been a manager at The Plunge for six years.

Grace says the team is gearing up for a busy weekend.

With high heat anticipated, numbers could double, from their normal 100 guests to about 200.

"Our fee is only $3 per person and we also have Plunge Passes, which are $10 for 8 entries, which is making it under $2 per person to come in," mentions Grace.

If you're not into swimming, there are other wet and wild ways across town to beat the heat.

"We have splash pads at four of our parks, at Copark, Centennial, Hidden Valley and Freedom Park; they go on at noon and they go off at 10 p.m. every day," says Brad Albert, Recreation and Community Services Director for the City of Hanford.

For those who prefer to stay dry, there is another social spot to keep comfortable, Albert mentions, "Our Longfield Center, our community center, that is used as a cooling center when needed, so that is also available to the community."

And emphasizes the importance of learning to swim.

The city offers grants for those who may not be able to afford lessons with their trained lifeguards- who stay busy with classes and events all summer.

The Plunge manager, Grace, says, "This weekend we have our public swim from 10-6, then on weekdays we are open from 12-6:30. And then, not this week but next week, on Friday, August 7, we will have our movie night."

Dive-In Movie gates open at 8; the movie, Finding Dory, starts at 8:30, or once the sun has set.

There is an entry fee of $3.
