MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- The joy of Christmas came a few days early in Merced County for over 4,000 children on Thursday and Friday.
For several months, hundreds of toys have been collected for a special two-day tradition, Operation Christmas Star.
"For me, it's all about the smiles and just seeing the excitement and joy on their face. Right now, times are hard and it feels good to give back to the community," said Maurice Celestine with Cal Fire.
The Merced County Sheriff's Office, Probation Department and Cal Fire have partnered for eight years, helping make Christmas extra memorable.
Every toy was wrapped and personally delivered one home at a time.
"It's just a wholesome moment because they also perceive us in a different way. We are here to give them back something and they're happy," said Merced County Deputy Alexandra Britton.
Sarah Baker, a mother of 4 in Planada, calling it a blessing especially while still trying to recover after her home flooded a few years ago.
"Some people lost everything. For me, I lost everything. And a lot of people helped out," said Sarah Baker.
Courtnie Cuteri was in tears, also feeling thankful that her 2 children got a little more this year.
"The economy has been rough, the paychecks haven't been really making it," said Courtnie Cuteri.
Heartfelt reactions and excitement that many say is always appreciated.
"They bring a lot of smiles to a lot of kids here in Planada. They are doing a great job," said Planada resident, Antonio Rodriguez.
