The race for California Governor narrows

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The final results for the primary election for California governor are coming into focus.

What started as a crowded race with 61 candidates now has three fighting for two spots.

The Republican standout, former Fox News Contributor Steve Hilton, telling journalists in Sacramento on Wednesday that Californians need change and a governor who has as good working relationship with the president.

"A majority of Californians think the state is going in the wrong direction and so we will be in the top two as the only campaign offering a new direction for California," Hilton said.

For Democrats, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and billionaire Tom Steyer lead the way.

Becerra taking the stage in Los Angeles Tuesday night after learning he's a frontrunner, saying he hopes to give all Californians a fair shot at the American dream.

"We'll build a government that runs not on promises, but on time and under budget and one that holds itself accountable when it doesn't," Becerra explained.

Steyer in San Francisco Tuesday night, telling supporters Californians deserve better with fair healthcare and taxes.

"We should have a system based on fairness, not on asking for fairness. Where the most-privileged pay their fair share not by charity but by law," Steyer said.

This race is the most expensive governor's contest on record with $327.6 million spent on ads and reservations, per AdImpact.

Steyer, the top spender, taking up 63% of that total, more than 20 times the amount of Becerra, and mostly from his own fortune.

With time, Californians will see if Steyer's big check paid off as only the top two candidates, regardless of political party, will advance to the November general election.

This is also the most expensive race in the country this year, according to the Associated Press.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan was the second largest spender per AdImpact, but he already conceded yesterday.
