Fresno police launches Violence Suppression Operation amid spike in violent crime

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno Police Department is taking a targeted approach to make the city safer after a recent spike in vicious attacks.

The agency launched a violent crime suppression operation over the weekend, and Chief Mindy Casto says it's getting results.

"We made 48 felony arrests, 53 misdemeanor arrests, contacted 124 gang members in the city and we recovered 15 crime guns," Chief Casto said.

This comes after five teenagers were stabbed in three separate incidents last week.

Two incidents happened during fights near Fulton Street Hop and Art Hop in downtown Fresno on Thursday night, where large crowds had gathered.

Nearby businesses now share their distress.

"It was like a kick to the stomach," said Cynthia Leary, The Cave Bar & Grill business manager. "It's sad it's happening with our youth because we're trying to make it fun for everybody."

The third attack happened just an hour later at River Park.

Police say about 10 teens got into a fight before a boy and two girls were stabbed in front of the movie theater.

Chief Casto says two arrests were made for that case, and four others were arrested for the downtown violence.

"All suspects are in custody from those stabbing incidents," Chief Casto stated.

Officers have increased patrols in hotspot areas every day, as well as at community events.

"Every arrest made during this operation is a step towards stopping violent offenders from victimizing this community," Chief Casto said.

Events like Fulton Street Hop and Art Hop are a lifeline for businesses, as they attract big crowds from across the region.

"It's important to us to keep these events going without the fear and have it be known as a family-oriented place," Leary added.

The Downtown Fresno Partnership plans to take over the Fulton Street Hop next month, adding more structure and security.

"That sense of structure sends a psychological message that helps with the feeling of safety and reality of safety," Downtown Fresno Partnership President/CEO Elliott Balch explained.

Action News did reach out to River Park about the recent violence to see if the area is increasing its own security but did not hear back.
