Watching Your Wallet: New Downtown Fresno business aims to help with DIY projects

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- If you've ever wished your home came with a maintenance manual, you're not alone.

"When you're first buying a house, you don't know what to look for as far as the structure of the house, the repairs that are going to come in the future," says Fabian Molina, co-founder of the DIY Resource Center.

"To be able to give people the confidence to be able to do the DIY projects themselves," says James Dominguez, co-founder of the DIY Resource Center.

Located on Tulare and U streets in Downtown Fresno, the DIY Resource Center is helping you with your home improvements so you can protect your investments.

"A lot of the classes we're going to offer will give people information about small repairs that they can do themselves that will save them a lot of money," Molina said.

Classes will cover topics ranging from plumbing and electrical to shelf mounting and custom cabinetry at all skill levels.

"One of our first classes we're going to offer is the first-time home owners guide, and we're going to offer an introduction to power tools," Molina said.

Molina says the DIY Resource Center is a dream 10 years in the making.

"Over the years working in the industry, I've met a lot of clients and a lot of people who have expressed that they wish there was a place that could help with those things around the house," she said.

Not sure what's behind the walls of your home? Here, you can avoid costly repairs for what should be a simple fix.

"We're also going to do advising and consulting services for homeowners that are looking to do major renovations," Molina said. "We're going to be able to sit down with them, do a plan for them, a budget and explain to them the permitting process and what they have to do to get that started."

Renovating the bathroom? Class goes beyond replacing showerheads -- how to demo, how to waterproof, even how to pick the right material for your walls are covered.

"Not only are you going to save money, not only are you going to look at something and say, 'Hey, I did that.' You're going to have a sense of pride, and not only that, when you take a class, it's a lifetime skill," Dominguez said.
