Fresno Police, firefighters serve up Labor Day breakfast for hundreds

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Hundreds of families kicked off Labor Day with a breakfast at the Fresno Fairgrounds Monday morning.

Fresno's Police Union took care of the pancakes and eggs while the city's firefighter union cooked up the sausages - all for hundreds of union workers and their families.

"We have our big griddle over here and we've got with experience making pancakes and you get good at it pretty quickly cause as you see," Damon Kurtz with the Fresno Police Officers Association. "They eat them pretty fast."

The event is held every year on Labor Day to celebrate the creation of organized labor.

"It's our day," Randy Ghan with the Central Labor Council said. "Labor Day is our day and we decided some 30 years ago that it was appropriate for us to come together and share that day."

From craft and trade, to retail and nursing, the Central Labor Council covers a numbers of unions, all here as one greater group.

"I don't think people realize what unions have gotten for them," union member Jennifer Jensen said.

As for the cooks, they seem to be okay with working on Labor Day

"Well you know that's okay, that's what we do," Kurtz said. "And it's a good way to go out and show our support of the other labor groups in the city and the county and the area and just make our families happy."
