Waymo is recalling almost 4,000 of its robotaxis.

Waymo is recalling almost 4,000 of its robotaxis, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The self-driving software in these vehicles was reportedly not able to recognize construction zones and ramp closures on freeways.
Officials say there were several instances in San Francisco and Phoenix where the robotaxis drove into zones that were closed, posing a potential crash hazard.
According to NHTSA, all of the recalled vehicles have this technological glitch.
A spokesperson for Waymo says the company "identified an area of improvement regarding performance around freeway construction zones."
Waymo says it "continues to operate its service as normal on surface streets in all cities."
The company has not yet provided freeway service to Texas, so the update will have no impact on passengers here.
Editor's note: A previous version of this story stated Waymo was pulling almost 4,000 of its robotaxis off the road, but that is not accurate and has since been corrected. The company clarified that a voluntary recall does not mean vehicles are off the road.
