20 years after Tupac's death, Fresno restaurant honors icon

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Twenty years after his death, rapper Tupac Shakur is being honored right here in the Central Valley not with music, but with food.

On Tuesday, the 20th anniversary of Shakur's death, Take 3 Burgers on the Fulton Mall will be transformed into the Powamekka Cafe - the restaurant Shakur once dreamed of opening.

It's a one-night event created from sketches the rapper left behind: which include a list of menu items he would serve and the name of the business.

Diners will be able to indulge in items like "The California Love Chicken Sandwich," "Hennessey Apple Butter Chicken Wings" and "Thug Passion Cake Pops" - all foods inspired by the late rapper's life and music.

"We wanted to embody some of the vibes he talked about," co-organizer Desirae Washington-Reed said. "Made it seem like a chill environment, embody that as well."

"With Tupac having such a huge impact on pop culture in general, we are all amazed it's lasted without him being here," organizer Sam Hansen said.

Powamekka Cafe on the Fulton Mall will also feature entertainment by local artists who will perform covers of their favorite Tupac songs. Doors open at 7 p.m. and organizers said they will stay open until they run out of food.
