Atwater police are investigating a Mother's Day murder.

ATWATER, Calif. (KFSN) -- Atwater police are investigating a Mother's Day murder. Matthew Tucker, 22, was shot to death Sunday night. It happened at a mobile home park on Olive Avenue near Herman Street.

Family members say they rushed to help Tucker and tried to get him to a safer location. Officers found him on the opposite side of the property near Atwater Boulevard, where loved ones have now set up a small memorial. He had gunshot wounds to his chest and foot, and later died at Mercy Medical Center in Merced.

Investigators say Tucker was a documented gang member. "Right now, we're going to be working extra patrols in that area to prevent any retaliation from occurring based on it possibly being a gang-related shooting," said Lt. Sammy Joseph of the Atwater Police Department.

Family members say Tucker was a father, and they insist he was not in a gang.

Police believe the suspects may have been on bicycles, but they're still conducting interviews to gather more information.
