Louis Morgan's home in a heavily wooded, low-lying area of western Lucas County is prime mosquito habitat. "If you come out at 6 o'clock in the morning, you know why. The mosquitoes will swarm you," he says.
A crew was misting his property for mosquitoes Tuesday, because his wife called the Toledo Area Sanitary District and requested the service on Monday. So did about 150 others.
"We have our drivers out working today, trying to get caught up with those requests for service," biologist Lee Mitchell says.
While the drivers are spraying the pesticide on residential properties, Mitchell is setting up mosquito traps. There are 14 traps scattered throughout Lucas County. He says the traps "give us an indication of each geographical area and how bad the mosquitoes are."
He hasn't done a count yet this year, but he expects the numbers to be high.
Crews will start fogging the metro areas in early to mid-June. If you have a mosquito problem that requires immediate attention, sanitary crews will take care of it. You'll just have to wait your turn.
If you live in Wood County, eight mosquito dunks are available to Wood County residents at 13 locations, including the health department. Each city or village handles mosquito control separately. In Fulton County, each municipality handles mosquito control differently. In Sanduky and Ottawa counties, there is no county-wide mosquito control. It is handled by municipalities.
