Teachers in demand for California schools

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Dozens of school districts up and down the Valley flocked to the campus of National University in Fresno trying to find new teachers.

According to National University, the supply of teachers in California is at a 10-year low and retirements are expected to create 100,000 job openings over the next decade.

About 30 Districts stretching from the Fresno area down to Bakersfield were looking for potential teaching candidates.

There were even signs advertising a $5,000 signing bonus for some. National University says they are among the top ten largest schools of education in the country.

"Education is very important to the survival of a society," Dr. Cathy Pohan with the university said. "And to have highly qualified teachers in every classroom is very important to student learning and is an issue of social justice and equity."

National University says just in the state of California alone, 22,000 are needed for the next school year.
