Evacuation warnings lifted as crews fight Madera Co. wildfire

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Madera County Sheriff's Office has lifted the evacuation warning for some mountain community residents as CAL FIRE crews continue to battle a wildfire in Madera County.

Authorities say the evacuation warning for Corrine Lake Road, Box Canyon Road, Tunoi Place, and Road 222 between the County Line and Corrine Lake Road was lifted on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters had a long two days fighting the Smalley Fire which grew to 45 acres and is 80% contained.

The wildfire started on Road 222 and Tunoi Place, which is six miles south of North Fork, on Memorial Day.

Within a few hours, it charred several acres and threatened lives and property, forcing authorities to issue mandatory evacuation orders for around 70 residents in the area.

Those evacuation orders were reduced to warnings early Tuesday morning before being lifted.

At least 16 fire engines, two water tenders and aircraft are expected to return Tuesday to help battle the wildfire.

Crews from CAL FIRE as well as the California Highway Patrol and PG&E were monitoring power lines in the community.

Those who need assistance with animal rescue can dial 311 and follow the instructions.
