Central Valley delegates front and center at Republican National Convention

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Valley delegates are right in the middle of Monday's boisterous action in Cleveland.

A vocal group of Never Trump forces sought to change the convention rules but their bid for a roll call vote was defeated.

"We have had some of the anti-Trump people trying to shout from the floor," Trump delegate Tom Fife said. "They're still trying right now to do a couple of things - just trying to mess with us a little bit, nothing surprising."

The California delegation, including several Valley delegates, is just eight rows back.

Congressman David Valadao of Hanford is among the Republicans who have not endorsed Trump but he expects party unity at the convention.

"I think everything is going to go smooth for Donald Trump," Valadao said. "I think he's going to be the nominee. There's always talk of some sort of floor fight. I don't see that happening. I don't believe they have the strength to do it."

Homeland Security and police have beefed up their presence around the convention.

Valley Trump delegates say the heavy security detail has eased their safety concerns.

"I mean this place is on lock down and I think with the events of the week with how our police have been treated around the country there's not going to be whole heck of a lot of waiting around before they step in and take action if protestors become unruly," Trump delegate Mike Der Manouel.

The California Highway Patrol unit in Cleveland includes local officers.

Delegates say the safety measures in place including a tall fence outside the venue and constant security checks should keep them away from protestors outside.
