4 killed in car chase that ended in crash in Madera County identified

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- The identities of the four people killed in a car chase in Madera County on Sunday have been released.

The Fresno County Coroner's Office has identified 25-year-old Juan Perez Quezada as the driver and 15-year-old David Daza Perez, 15-year-old Benito Mendoza and 13-year-old Stephen Rodriguez as Quezada's passengers.

The crash happened on the northbound Highway 99 on-ramp near Avenue 17 following a chase with Madera County Sheriff's Deputies.

The California Highway Patrol, who is handling the investigation, says some people in the car were not wearing seatbelts but did not specify who.

According to the Madera County Sheriff's Office, the chase started after deputies responded calls of people breaking into vehicles in the area of El Vado Drive and Avenue 18 1/2 just after 1 a.m Sunday.

When deputies arrived, a suspect vehicle matching the description given by callers sped away. Deputies pursued the suspects until the driver of the suspected vehicle lost control and crashed.

An 18-year-old passenger, who has not been identified, was airlifted to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

The investigation into the crash and the vehicle break-ins is ongoing.
