Base camp for the Garnet Fire is moving away from Avocado Lake

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Firefighters and crews battling the Garnet Fire will have a new post in the coming days.

As the Garnet Fire burns into its third week, fire officials leading incident command say they've outgrown the camp at Avocado Lake.

The crews and resources stationed at the park will be moved to the new Harlan Camp in Clovis or to the already established bases at China Peak and Wishon Reservoir.

"These basecamps are critical to support the firefighters to go out on the line to fight the fire," said Nathan Judy with the California Interagency Management Team. "They have to have infrastructure, right? They need food, they need places to sleep, they need places to refuel their vehicles."

This comes as teams are trying to keep the fire from growing to the North and Northwest, facing challenges created by terrain and fuels.

"The Sierra National Forest experienced, due to four years of drought and bark beetle infestation that followed that, up to 58% mortality rate within the forest as a whole. So that is impacting the firefight," said Rachael Thurston with the U.S. Forest Service.

Thurston adds the area to the east is very steep and there are few access roads, so they are relying heavily on aircraft.

The base camp should be broken down within the next few days and fire officials expect to be serving crews dinner at the new Harlan Camp by Friday.
