VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Growth in the City of Visalia means more employment opportunities for locals. One of the latest projects is Carvana's fulfillment center. The new facility could create 500 or more jobs in the coming years.
"We welcome folks who want to come in and do business in our city, and you know these are going to be really good jobs. These are going to be mechanic jobs. I mean these are going to be folks that you know aren't making minimum wage. These are going to be careers. So we're excited for our community. We are excited for Carvana," says Brett Taylor, Visalia Mayor.
The anticipated 172,000-sq.-ft. facility will replace an empty lot on Riggin Avenue.
It will be located in Industrial Park, which the city strategically developed to serve the entire state.
Taylor explains that Carvana will use the space as a service center, "So when you sell a car to them, they will transport the car here. The folks will recondition the car, get it ready for sale. So it's going to be great for our community. It's going to be a lot of jobs when it's completely filled."
The multi-million dollar project is among the many new developments in Visalia.
Including the expansion of Amazon, the new 7-Brew coffee chain on Mooney Blvd. and more, "We have a new hotel that's going on Mooney Boulevard, over by Aldi's. We have another hotel that's going to be out there by Boomers," explains Taylor.
"So a lot of good stuff is happening in Visalia, a lot of new homes. So we're very blessed and thankful for the businesses that are choosing to make Visalia their home," continues Taylor.
Express Employment Professionals, which has helped over 20,000 locals find jobs in the last 20 years, says Visalia's growth is also boosting the local economy.
"Because for every one person that gets a paycheck, it helps support between 5 and 6 other people, so those people are all spending their money locally so it stays in the local economy," mentions Kris Brokaw, Franchise Owner of Express Employment Professionals in Visalia and Fresno.
The City of Visalia says it could be more than a year until Carvana is up and running.
In the meantime, people looking for employment are encouraged to contact organizations like Express for currently available job opportunities.
