FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A weekend event in Fresno aims to celebrate life and bring together cancer survivors, patients and their families, emphasizing hope and community for those facing the disease.
cCARE Fresno will host its third annual "Rise and Shine Survivor Day Celebration" on Saturday, offering a space for cancer fighters and their loved ones to connect, share resources and hear stories of resilience.
Local mother and cancer advocate Niki Xayboutda is among those sharing her story. Diagnosed with endometrial cancer two years ago, she underwent chemotherapy and radiation and has been in remission for the past year.
"I'm just glad it's over now. That's all that matters," Xayboutda said.
She described the emotional challenges of her treatment, including attending appointments alone. Despite those hardships, Xayboutda said her support system - including her children and family - helped her through the experience.
"But I'm glad that when I get out this building, I had my kids and my family with me, which meant a lot to me because that's my little support system that I have," she said.
She said events like the "Rise and Shine Survivor Day Celebration" are vital in reminding others they are not alone in their journey.
Xayboutda will be one of several guest speakers at Saturday's event at the cCARE Fresno Center. Her message to others facing cancer is rooted in the importance of connection and openness.
"Even if you feel like you're alone, there's people in this building cCare that's willing to talk to you, help you out, too. So don't ever feel like you're alone. Just speak to somebody honestly because if anything, I wish I spoke about how I feel instead of just holding it in," she said.
The free event will feature guest speakers, more than 20 vendors, and activities including yoga and journaling classes, along with resources for patients, caregivers and families.
Dr. Musti Haseeb, a medical oncologist and hematologist with cCARE, said the event is designed to inspire hope among attendees.
"The human spirit is often stronger than the diagnosis. That's the important part," Haseeb said.
Organizers hope participants leave with a sense of community and encouragement as they navigate their cancer journeys.
The "Rise and Shine Survivor Day Celebration" will take place Saturday, May 16, from 8 am to 12 pm at the cCARE Fresno Center.
