Fresno Fire Department fosters a new generation of Firefighters

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Character-building, hands-on experience and personal growth. The Fresno Fire Department's explorer program has been a launching pad for young firefighters for decades.

The spark was instant for Seth Wedemeyer, who became an explorer at 19 years old. The program ignited his passion for service.

"It was absolutely 100% down my alley because it both challenged my brain and my body. When I looked down, and I saw my nice clothes on, trying to make a good impression, we're covered head to toe with dirt and mud and ash. I absolutely fell in love with the job," says Seth Wedemeyer, Fresno Fire Department.

Justin Gibson knew from a young age he wanted to be a firefighter.

"I had a mom growing up, but she was never there, so the station life was my second home," says Gibson.

He basically grew up on a fire engine. His dad is a Captain at Fresno Fire. The crew was his family, since day one.

"I remember times coming to the station and just being a terror, jump in and out of the rig. I would make the station messy, push people around, tackle them, but they didn't mind. That's why I fell in love with Fresno, and it was a home away from home," says Gibson.

From teenage explorer to firefighter and now a mentor himself, Justin carries on his father's legacy.

"I feel like I have big shoes to fill. I hope I can make him proud," says Gibson.

Each season, 40 future heroes ages 15-20 meet biweekly at the station on the weekends. During the program, explorers can even work their way out alongside on-duty crews.

When they reach the end, they receive guidance as they apply for the real thing.

Wade Kandarian was in the program for seven years. He's now a full-time fireman, giving back to his hometown.

"It's a great feeling when you get to someone potentially on a very bad day, the worst day of their life," says Kandarian.

From young people to mature adults dedicated to service, each are ready to do all they can to help in times of crisis.

Recruitment opens back up every year during the spring. There are opportunities for scholarships and financial aid through the Fresno Fire Chief's Foundation, which ensures that anyone, regardless of their economic situation, can participate.
