Fresno native, Pepperdine commit Ayden Fynaut wins 99th Fresno City Amateur Championship

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- One of the longest-standing amateur sports traditions in California took place for the 99th time at Riverside Golf Course in Northwest Fresno.

The Fresno City Amateur welcomed some of the best amateur golfers in California and prides itself on bringing the prominent golfers from the Central Valley together every year.

Ayden Fynaut, a Fresno native and Pepperdine golf commit, takes home the 99th title after shooting 14-under through three rounds. In the final round this Memorial Day, Fynaut carded 7-under (65). Kevin Cook and Jonathan Chen were tied for second on the weekend (-8), 6 strokes behind the high school senior.

"Putting. That's all it is." Fynaut said. "Just making putts down the stretch when I need to. Like five, six-footers, 10-footers, you name it. Just making that ball go in the hole. I made two 30-footers on (hole)10 and 11 and from there the momentum just kept going."

Fynaut birded nine times in his final round; the result is a stark contrast to his disqualification from the event two years ago.

"I played pretty solid for three days. I had the shanks going the first two days, but I worked with my coach, Mike Schy, out at the tent (before the third round), and we figured some things out."

Longtime valley golf coach Mike Schy is a previous Fresno City Amateur winner. Now, Schy's prodigy will join him on the trophy.

"He won it a long time ago... I told him, going into this week, I want to be up there (on the trophy) with you, GOAT. Because he's the GOAT."

Fynaut will head to Malibu this fall. He'll join the Waves golf team, which is notably a top program in the country.
