Oakland park hosts free sports clinic for kids with Disney Jr., ESPN and Every Kid Sports

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Ira Jinkins Park in Oakland was the site of a project that's very special to us at ABC7 Eyewitness News.

On Saturday, the park hosted a free sports event for young children, organized as part of a national initiative by ESPN, Disney Jr., and Every Kid Sports.

This event is part of Disney's ongoing commitment to supporting kids, families and communities.

"Kids don't get the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of these sports or participate due to the cost. And today they have the opportunity to learn these sports with no problem of paying for anything. It's free for today," said Myka Hammock with Oakland Parks, Recreation, and Youth Development.

Mickey Mouse surprised kids with a special appearance for the day as they were encouraged to get on the field and play.

"It's just, it's a wonderful event for all the kids and families," said KGO-TV President and General Manager Dave Wurtzel.

Oakland's own Eat. Learn. Play. was also there to provide children with healthy snacks, books and other resources.
