Jury finds Shane Shahan guilty of all charges in central Fresno murder trial

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A jury has found 36-year-old Shane Shahan guilty on all charges, including murder, in a deadly Central Fresno crash.

Shahan was accused of killing Jesse Espino in a collision at the intersection of First and McKinley in January 2023. Much of the incident was captured on surveillance video, including Shahan fleeing the scene.

Shahan has a history of alcohol-related driving crimes, and courts put him on notice, telling him that if he continued to drive while under the influence and somebody died, he could be charged with murder.

Prosecutors claimed Shahan had alcohol and marijuana in his system, and they followed through on charging him with murder. However, testing showed he was not legally intoxicated. He was not charged with driving under the influence.

Defense attorney and Action News Legal Analyst Tony Capozzi admitted to the jury that his client did, in fact, flee and did not have a valid license.

His defense has argued he was not under the influence, and believes the victim was not wearing a seat belt which they claim could've contributed to the death.

Shahan faces a possible life sentence for the murder.
