Missing hawk returns to Fresno Chaffee Zoo after 15 months

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Ripley, a Harris's Hawk who has been missing from the Fresno Chaffee Zoo for over a year, has returned!

Zoo officials say that on July 29, someone in Prather noticed an unfamiliar bird in their yard. Their research led them to the story about Ripley, and they contacted the zoo.

Prather is about 25 miles away from the zoo.

They were able to confirm that the bird was indeed Ripley.

Staff members went into the pond and called for Ripley. He flew to them after about 20 minutes.

"It was truly a massive effort from everyone in the Fresno community, and we are endlessly grateful to everyone who shared his story, sent in sightings and supported the search to bring Ripley back where he belongs," said Ronnie Kerestus, the zoo's Curator of Outreach.

Ripley initially went missing in April of 2024 after being chased off zoo grounds by native red tailed hawks.

Officials say that Ripley is in good health and is receiving treatment at the zoo's facility. They have not confirmed if he will return to the Bird Show.
