Resolution to declare Madera Co. a 'Second Amendment sanctuary' passes

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A resolution to declare Madera County a "Second Amendment sanctuary" passed on Tuesday inside the Madera County Board chambers.

The resolution was sponsored by District 1 Supervisor Jordan Wamhoff, who said during discussion that the move reaffirms Madera County's stance in protecting the rights upheld by the Constitution.

The title is symbolic and does not directly defy or change state law.

Supervisor Robert Macaulay abstained from the item, saying the motion would divide the county.

"I'm not about promoting this kind of action," he said. "I'm not about promoting division between 60 percent and 40 percent. I don't think items like this have any place at this board."

Supporters say it is a response to increasingly strict gun control laws introduced by Gov. Newsom.

Newsom has said California's gun laws are effective in preventing gun-related deaths.
