Sanger West High School opens student commons with ribbon cutting

SANGER, Calif. (KFSN) -- Sanger West High School marked a major expansion Tuesday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open its new student commons, a facility designed to give students a dedicated place to eat, study and gather.

The celebration included performances from the school's band and cheer team as students, staff and community members gathered to mark the opening of the nearly 38,000-square-foot building.

Principal Ryan Osier said the space represents a significant investment in the overall student experience.

"This is a brand new facility that's going to serve as a hub in the heart of our community, of our campus, where students are going to come together, be able to eat," Osier said. "And just really a hangout spot where relationships can be built."

The lower level of the building features a large seating area where students can eat lunch and spend time with friends. Floor-to-ceiling windows give the space an open, modern feel. A large video board allows the area to be used for group meetings and campus events.

Senior and Associated Student Body President Sophia Valverde said the commons has transformed the atmosphere of the school.

"It feels like, I don't know, like, I guess college, yeah," Valverde said. "Because it's so nice and just like, everything about it doesn't even give like the high school feeling, per se."

Upstairs, the facility houses a new library equipped with classroom-style seating, drop-down projectors, small huddle rooms for group projects and a technology help desk. Valverde said students appreciate having their own space after previously sharing facilities with the neighboring middle school.

"It's such a wonderful opportunity to have as a student, especially as a senior," she said. "From seeing, from being at JFK to transitioning over here, just seeing like everything opening is such an honor."

The project was funded through voter-approved Measure C and Measure M bonds. Osier said he hopes students recognize the facility as a sign of the community's commitment to education.

"I hope that it says that our board members, our district administration and our community, our parents, all of our stakeholders involved, care about them and care about their success," Osier said. "To provide these opportunities for them, so that they have state-of-the-art facilities to maximize their potential."

Campus development at Sanger West High School is ongoing. District officials said the next major facility to open will be a new gymnasium featuring an indoor track on the second floor and updated locker rooms, expected to be completed in time for the next sports season.
