Deputy shoots suspect linked to Fresno County home invasion after violent confrontation, FCSO say
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A suspect is in the hospital after a deputy shot at him in self-defense while responding to a home invasion in Fresno County, deputies say.
According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, a deputy was called to a home near Olive and Cornelia avenues around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday for a reported home invasion.
When the deputy arrived, the suspect had already left the residence. Those living at the home described the suspect and his vehicle as a white van with a ladder rack attached.
About 19 minutes later, another call came in from a home off Garfield and Shields avenues, near Roosevelt Elementary, matching the suspect's description from the first home.
According to the sheriff's office, the suspect threatened to kill those residents.
When the deputy arrived at the second home, the suspect and deputy got into a fight.
The deputy pulled out their weapon and fired three shots at the suspect, striking him down.
Additional deputies arrived at the scene minutes later and provided aid to the suspect.
The suspect was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with severe injuries and is undergoing surgery.
FCSO has not identified the suspect.
The deputy was also taken to the hospital with some bruises and scrapes.
Both homes did not know the suspect.
It is unknown if the suspect had a weapon when he attacked the deputy.
According to the sheriff's office, the suspect will face multiple felony charges, including felony assault on a peace officer.
Authorities say that there is no threat to the public.
Shields Avenue is closed off to drivers at Chateau Fresno Avenue and Grantland Avenue. The area is expected to stay closed until early Wednesday morning as the investigation continues. Those traveling in the area are asked to find a different route.
