Suspect in armed robbery at northeast Fresno smoke shop in custody

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A suspect wanted in connection to an armed robbery and carjacking at a smoke shop in northeast Fresno Monday afternoon is now in custody, after hours of negotiating with officers.

The incident happened in the parking lot of the Cali Smoke Shop near Champlain and Perrin just after 1 pm.

A Good Samaritan led police to the suspect an apartment complex near Copper and Chestnut.

A SWAT team was called to the scene with police since they believed the suspect might be armed.

Several streets in the area were closed off as a precaution and officers urged residents in the neighborhood to shelter in place.

Authorities were able to make contact with the suspect shortly after 8 pm.

He eventually surrendered to police peacefully.

Police say the suspect was in his friend's apartment and they do not believe he lived there.

No weapon was found on him when he was taken into custody.

Police expect the roadways to reopen soon, but expect an investigation to continue into the night.
