Tips on how to buy your student a laptop at a fraction of the price

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Beyond the backpacks and pencils, students are also dependent on technology in school.

Buying a laptop for your student can take a big bite out of your budget.

This year, the National Retail Federation says families with students in elementary through high school plan to spend an average of about $860 in back-to-school shopping. They're budgeting about $300 of that total for electronics.

"Parents are stretching their budgets. They're not slashing them, and that means they're looking for these smart strategies," Retail Insights Expert Stephanie Carls said.

She says some of those smart strategies include finding ways to save.

If you're buying brand new, she says use sites like RetailMeNot for coupons and cashback offers.

Make sure you utilize a student discount and consider trading in some of your old, outdated tech to keep costs down.

Apple, Samsung, and even Best Buy often give credit toward a new device when you trade in an old one.

Carls also recommends families look into refurbished devices.

Amazon Renewed, Best Buy Outlet, and eBay Refurbished all offer a variety of options with warranties.

There are also special programs for low-income families.

Computers for Classrooms offers refurbished laptops for as little as $125.

"We're a nonprofit computer refurbishing company. We provide discounted computer systems to families on government assistance," CEO of Computers for Classrooms Louis Davis said.

Once you submit proof that you qualify, all you have to do is submit the full payment, and the laptop will be delivered to you in less than two weeks.

"Our hope is that they succeed in what they're looking to do," Davis said. "And also in their educational opportunities."

Many school districts also offer students the option to check out a laptop if a student doesn't have access to a computer at home.

Central Unified has the School2Home Technology Assistance Program.

Fresno Unified has the "The Student Laptop 1:1 Program"

Clovis Unified allows students to check out laptops at their school site.

Parents can also purchase a laptop at a discounted rate through their partner LaptopSchools.

The benefit is that they'll also help with service and repairs.

Whichever direction you decide to go, Carls says explore all your options before making the best decision for you and your family.

"The goal isn't just cheap, it's getting it right the first time so parents are prioritizing price and performance," Carls said. "This is still the year to shop smarter, not spend more."

Experts say shoppers can use website trackers like Camel Camel Camel for Amazon to track certain items.

She says that helps to ensure you get the lowest price, especially on laptops and accessories.
