West Nile Virus death in Kings County is California's 1st this year, officials say

KINGS COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Health officials in Kings County have confirmed the state's first West Nile Virus death of 2026.

Three cases have been reported in the county this year, with the first symptomatic one reported on July 20.

No information on the person who died has been released.

Mosquito control districts in Valley counties are monitoring activity and testing for West Nile virus, with officials reporting different trends in each county.

Symptoms of the virus include a fever, head or body aches, and joint pain.

Some patients may not develop any symptoms at all.

Experts recommend remembering the "three D's" for mosquito protection: use repellents containing DEET, take precautions during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and drain standing water around homes and properties.
