Two killed, dozens injured after two trains collide in South Carolina

NEW YORK -- A federal investigation is underway after an Amtrak train and a freight train collided, killing two people and injuring dozens more.

The accident happened Sunday morning, as the Amtrak train carried passengers from New York to Miami.

The train ended up on the wrong track when a manual switch was hit, diverting the train from the main line onto a side track, which caused a head-on collision with a parked freight train.

There were nearly 140 passengers on board the train when the collision occurred.

The impact killed the Amtrak train engineer and conductor and injured dozens of passengers.

Investigators say the train was traveling between 50 and 60 miles per hour when it slammed into the freight train.
