And, they've seen injuries from decorating indoors too. Dr. Eugene Izsak said, "Whether it's a young person or an older person, or we're giving the glass ornament to the child to hang on the tree but it's still glass, and they're running around and having a great time, and they fall and cut their hands."
Dr. Izsak says he's also seeing a lot of children in the emergency room with colds. "Right after Thanksgiving, we see a lot more colds in kids because somebody came in for Thanksgiving dinner with a cold, and passed it around."
He wants parents to remember, with these respiratory viruses, antibiotics won't help with the symptoms, which include fever, chest congestion, and "runny nose, dry scratchy throat, coughing, body aches."
Dr. Izsak says he's definitely seeing a stomach virus going around in children, bringing vomiting and diarrhea. And, he's seeing croup, which brings a barky cough and noisy breathing.
While antibiotics won't help with either of those, they can help with strep throat. "Definitely we're seeing an uptick in the number of cases of strep throat. Classic strep throat is a red scratchy throat with spots on the tonsils, fever, throat pain and neck pain."
Add to that a possible rash, and body aches. Again, antibiotics are helpful in treating confirmed strep throat.
