Mother arrested after investigators say baby found on meth

FRESNO, Calif.

27-year-old Brittany Wood told investigators she had no idea how the baby ingested the drug.

Those who were with the baby Thursday morning said the little girl was inconsolable, jittery, and making movements with her hands that were very unusual. On Friday the baby's mother was in jail for felony child abuse.

Hospital workers notified Fresno County deputies Thursday morning after the 10-month-old baby was brought to the emergency room at Children's Hospital Central California. Action News is not showing the baby's face in order to protect the child.

"The hospital is still running tests to determine the method of ingestion, she did have a burn on her tongue, which they suspect the chemicals from the methamphetamine burned her. I guess it could also be a burn from a crack pipe, or something else," Fresno County Sheriff's Detective Danielle Isaac said.

Detectives say the little girl's mother, Brittany Wood, shares custody with the child's father.

A woman who lives at the home where Wood has been staying told Action News she saw the baby Thursday morning and that "the baby was crying for a few hours. I told her to take her to the hospital because there's something wrong with her. She said she was teething and had five teeth coming in."

Investigators say they found meth and drug paraphernalia during the search at the home Wood has been living. They also removed another child from the residence.

Detectives say Wood was the only caregiver responsible for the baby when she ingested the drug. They're also investigating whether the child may also be the victim of physical abuse.

The baby was still at Children's Hospital Central California on Friday night. Wood remains in custody. Her bail is $25 thousand.
