Defendant changes plea before video of deadly Fresno crash unsealed

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Steve Garcia pleaded no contest Thursday to a felony hit-and-run charge that caused the death of Paul Sanchez, moments before a court hearing was set to include new evidence and witness testimony.

During the hearing, Fresno County Superior Court Judge Houry Sanderson addressed Garcia about the meaning of the plea.

"Do you understand the 'no contest' plea in a criminal case is still treated the same way as a 'guilty' plea, and you will still be found guilty?" Judge Sanderson asked.

Garcia responded, "Yes."

The plea marked the first time Garcia took responsibility for Sanchez's death.

Investigators say Sanchez was riding his bike in February 2024 when Garcia crashed into him and fled the scene, later turning himself in.

The crash happened just feet from Sanchez's Central Fresno home.

Family members were in the courtroom Thursday as the judge formally took the plea.

"The court will accept the plea entered by Mr. Garcia," the judge said.

The change of plea came just minutes before Judge Sanderson was set to hear from witnesses and review new evidence.

Action News learned that the evidence included graphic surveillance video of the crash that prosecutors planned to play publicly.

"It was evident that you were impaired that day from the witness statements, but not enough for you to be charged with it," Judge Sanderson said. "You need to sober up in your head."

"I have to be very frank with you, sir," she added. "Literally, you're getting away with it... this person died and you left the scene."

Garcia has been out on bond and is due back in court on June 23 for sentencing. He faces up to four years in state prison, and the judge has already said she is not inclined to grant probation.
