FULSHEAR, TX -- A suspected drunk driver had a smile for the camera and two "thumbs up" after getting arrested for drunk driving and evading arrest Saturday, according to a Facebook post by the Fulshear Police Department.

But why such joy - particularly with what appears to be a bloodied face and hands?

The post says the unidentified man is thankful to be alive after an officer with the department, a Sgt. Vargas, saved his life.

The Facebook post notes the man was about to be pulled over by Vargas for suspected drunk driving when he sped away. However, his alleged escape effort was short-lived. The man jumped a curve and crashed upside down into a pond.

The Facebook post reads, "The driver was disoriented, possibly drunk and sitting in a moss filled pond. ... Sergeant Vargas, without regard for his own safety, quickly jumped into the pond and managed to pull the young man out of the car before he could have possibly drowned."

According to the police post, the man repeatedly thanked Vargas for saving his life throughout his ride to jail.

The post adds, "We are thankful Sergeant Vargas was not injured during the arrest. We are thankful the young man was not killed in the accident. We are also thankful the drunk driving suspect was taken off the street (literally) before he could have possibly injured himself or others on their way home from a Thanksgiving visit. The Fulshear Police Department would like to THANK and commend Sergeant Vargas for a job well done."
