Derek Carr makes impact on and off field

NAPA, Calif. (KFSN) -- NFL Training camps are in full swing as teams prepare for another NFL season. In Napa, the Raiders are looking for their first playoff appearance since 2002 and former Fresno State Quarterback Derek Carr is leading the silver and black both on and off the field. On the field his poise, command and leadership has caught the attention of fans.

"His command and his vision also, he sees the whole field. Playing at Fresno State helped him a lot, expanding the whole field, the vision that he can throw the outs and throw down deep," said Raiders fan Lou Dokos.

Every Sunday fans can see what Carr does on the field, but it's what he does away from the bright lights that has made a lasting impact on the Ohman family from Sonoma.

"He spent about 5 minutes with the boys just talking about hard work, loved his quote, you know guys I was never the most talented but nobody was ever going to out work me, you might not have the most talent but keeping working hard and keeping working hard," said Joe Ohman. His son Trevor who plays quarterback and is entering his sophomore year of high school was grateful for the time Carr gave him.

"A starting NFL quarterback, there is only 32 of them in them world and one of them I got to spend time with and he talked to me. One of the 32 men in the world talked to me and that's pretty cool to me." Carr added, "I'm more about impacting lives and if just being myself and I happen to be a football player and I can impact young men's lives, that fires me up, that gives me chills just thinking about it, that's real life."
