FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- City crews are on the scene of an apparent water main break.

It caused flooding in the area of Palo Alto near Herndon right near Rio Vista Middle School in northwest Fresno.

Bottled water and portable restrooms are on campus at Rio Vista Middle school and River Bluff Elementary.

City officials say an underground pipe broke, sending the water bubbling up from the ground.

To stop the water and make the repair, workers had to shut off water to the area, leaving many residents with a difficult start to the day.

The neighborhoods were without water for a couple hours, with their service now restored.

Meanwhile, the school is prepared to be without water for the remainder of Monday.

It's not yet known how long the repair will take but crews have had to dig up a considerable portion of the roadway to reach the break.

It's not yet known what may have led to the break in this newer area of town.
