77-year-old man killed in Selma mobile home fire identified

SELMA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The man killed in a mobile home fire in Selma has been identified as 77-year-old Refugio Ramirez.

The fire started at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and killed Ramierz and his two dogs.

Neighbors said Ramirez had difficulty getting around and the flames spread too quickly for anyone nearby to help.

"It was so big and so fast that there was no hope of saving him," said neighbor Vivian Piestrup.

The mobile home was left barely intact and heavily charred. Two cars on the property were also badly burned.

A neighbor who spoke with Action News on Sunday said she had known Ramirez for more than a decade.

"He was an awesome man. Everybody liked him," said the neighbor.

A man who lives directly behind the victim told Action News that he was able to keep the flames from spreading to his own home.

However, despite trying to rescue Ramirez and the two dogs trapped inside, he was unable to save them.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
