Woman hit and killed by suspected DUI driver in central Fresno identified

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A woman who was hit and killed Sunday afternoon by a suspected DUI driver in central Fresno has been identified.

The Fresno County Coroner's Office has identified her as 30-year-old Shante Vaszquez of Fresno.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Sunday on First Street and Olive Avenue.

Investigators arrested 47-year-old Akinyele Chatmon for DUI.

They say he was traveling West on Olive avenue when his car went up onto the curb, hit Vasquez, then a power pole.

Police say as the vehicle re-entered the roadway, Vaszquez was dragged into the intersection and died.

Chatmon is suspected of being under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol.

The investigation is ongoing.
