No matter what state you live in, it's always hard to keep up with the joneses.

Slate magazine recently published a story about the most affluent towns and cities in each state, using data from the Census and the 2008-2012 American Community Survey. While one might think that luxurious cities like New York, San Francisco or Chicago would be the top income generating areas, the data revealed that smaller cities actually generate much more wealth.

Two cities in the U.S. reported their residents having median incomes of higher than $250,000: Hidden Hills, CA (a city in the Los Angeles county area) and Chevy Chase, MD near Washington, D.C. 13 of the cities included had a median income of over $200,000.

Other entries on the list included suburban communities of larger cities, like Cherry Hills Village, CO to Denver, CO, or Coldstream, OH to Cincinnati, OH. Out of all the highest income cities, Jericho, Vermont had the lowest median income at $78,618.
