2 killed after Honda crashes into Mustang at more than 100 mph in San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Two people were killed Monday morning after a Honda Civic traveling more than 100 mph crashed into a Mustang in a San Bernardino intersection.

Authorities said the incident happened just before 5 a.m. when a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy tried to pull over the Honda driver. Instead of stopping, the driver sped off and led the deputy on a short chase.

The Honda driver reached speeds well above 100 mph and ended up crashing into a Mustang at Mount Vernon and Rialto avenues. The crash was caught on surveillance video and pieces of the cars were scattered throughout the street.

The impact was so violent that the engine from the Mustang fell out into the middle of the street, authorities said.

The driver of the Mustang survived and was transported to a nearby hospital, but a passenger in the car and the driver of the Honda died at the scene.

Authorities said if the driver of the Honda matches a suspect they were looking into, that person had some minor outstanding warrants and was driving on a suspended license.

The Mustang driver was expected to be released from the hospital later in the afternoon.
