AAA projecting almost 49 million Americans will hit the road, skies, and seas this Thanksgiving-- that is 1 million more than last year.

GasBuddy projects the national average gas price this Thanksgiving will be the third lowest in over a decade at $2.11 per gallon. The current national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.14, in California the average is around 2.60. And travelers are taking advantage, according to AAA, driving is going to be the most popular mode of travel. More than 89-percent of those traveling for Thanksgiving are hitting the roadways. That is up two percent from last year.

As for safety tips when you're hitting the roadways, you do not just have to worry about the weather. AAA expects to rescue more than 370,000 motorists this Thanksgiving, with the primary reasons being dead batteries, flat tires, and lockouts.

AAA recommends motorists check the condition of their battery and tires and pack emergency kits in their vehicles before heading out on a holiday getaway.

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, November 23rd to Sunday, November 27th. You might want to leave earlier than Wednesday.

Google Maps compiled traffic data for the Thanksgiving holiday giving you the best and worst times to travel. The best time to leave was Sunday, November 20th at 6:00 a.m.-- best time to return is Friday at 6:00 a.m.

Now to the worst-- the worst time to leave is this Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. Worst time to return is 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
