Feed the Children helps 800 Fresno families

FRESNO, Calif.

The face of hunger is sometimes hard to see, but Tuesday morning, that sight filled a parking lot in Downtown Fresno.

Cornerstone Church Senior Pastor /*Jim Franklin*/ said, "What I believe this is going to do is empower them. They're going to recognize that they are not alone."

Cornerstone Church teamed up with Feed the Children to distribute boxes of food and supplies to those in need.

People started lining up hours before the giveaway, like the Dungans who got there at 5:30 a.m.

Carmen Dungan said, "I think everybody here is being blessed, all in their own ways they're blessed."

The Dungans were able to take boxes of much needed supplies home and say, they and others in line, were grateful.

"It's a good thing because a lot of them can't provide for themselves, considering how the economy is out here," said Benito Dungan. "Without programs like this people would be starving."

Organizers say the free event brought a diverse group, which shows poverty can happen to anyone.

Box by box, volunteers full of smiles, loaded carts and dolleys and helped recipients with their supplies.

At the end of the day, volunteers gave away food and supplies to 800 Fresno families.

Cornerstone Church members say this event also feeds them, with hope and love.

Feeding Fresno Director Tony Prendez said, "I think it's great. I'm so excited about. I'm basically touched by them being able to come out and making themselves available to reach out and touch people's lives."

This is the second time Feed the Children program has come to Fresno. Organizers say every time, it leaves a lasting impression on those that give and those that receive.

Since 2009, Feed the Children has helped nearly half a million families across the country.

Cornerstone Church gives away food to the community every Wednesday and the third Saturday of the month. They are always accepting donations.
