California wineries see record overseas sales for 2007

SACRAMENTO The Wine Institute says California wines set a record for overseas sales revenue last year.

The state produces 95 percent of U.S. wine exports, which rose nearly 9 percent to $951 million last year.

Revenue increased at least 20 percent in Canada and several East Asian countries.

California winemakers were helped in part by dollar's low exchange rate, which makes U.S. products more competitive with wines from other countries.

About a fifth of California bottled wine shipments last year were to foreign destinations.
