Bay Area wood fire ban in effect

A ban on wood fires during "Spare the Air Nights" went into effect in the Bay Area Saturday.

Residents from San Jose to Windsor won't be able to use their fireplaces or wood stoves when the air quality poses a greater health risk, typically about 20 nights each winter.

If a wood-burning fire is your only source of heat, you'll be exempt from the new regulation.

But, residents who ignore the ban could face a fine of up to $1000.
