Fresno Mayor Proposes 125 Layoffs

FRESNO, Calif. The mayor said the city is facing a $28-million dollar shortfall. She is proposing 125 layoffs for city employees and most city employees will need to take 5 furlough days between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve of this year. The mayor is also proposing the closure of two Fresno City fire stations.

Most of the layoffs will impact civilian police employees. The mayor said layoff notices will be sent out the first week of December and take effect on December 31st.

66 vacant positions will remain unfilled and many current employees face reduced work hours in the next year.

Last month, the mayor warned council members, layoffs and cuts would be coming. She blames a decline in sales tax revenue and an increase in debt payments for the budget gap.
