Give The Gift of Good Health

Fresno, CA This Christmas, you can give your family the gift of good health; just add a little color to their diet.

"The darker the color, usually the better for you," said Tara Mardigan, RD, Dietician

Experts say pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and carrots fight colon, breast, prostate and lung cancer. That goes for the decorative squash too.

"They usually end up in garnishes and they should be on the plate too," said Mardigan.

A Pumpkin Bisque made with apples and curry is a double bonus.

Apples can help ward off throat, mouth, colon and possibly breast cancer. Just watch out for apple pie – apple's lose some of their cancer-fighting abilities when peeled and mixed with sugar and fat.

"So you can really have a nice get together with all of these healthy ingredients," said Holly Dion, Chef.

And just one serving of Hershey's Extra Dark, Dark Chocolate has the same amount of antioxidants as three cups of tea, two glasses of red wine or one and one-third cups of blueberries.

"You can go shopping and buy your friends and family all kinds of different gifts but I think the real gift is giving them healthy foods," said Jewel Healey.

So maybe the best present this year won't be under the tree, but on the table.
