On this Good Friday many churches are readying for Easter Sunday services. But here at the Praise Church of God In Christ in Clovis it's also working on a new offering: assistance to anyone needing to stretch their food dollars through a program called 'the treasure box'. Felecia Ogbodo signed up for one and paid $30. She considers it a bargain while showing us the array of meats, treats, pasta, wraps and more, "Twice that amount, maybe, but not for $30." Felecia Ogbodo is talking about the contents of "the treasure box". 30 dollars buys 21 to 25 pounds of name brand food items that can feed a family of four for a week. She's pleased with the variety and quality, "I can definitely, you know, save a few dollars and food is expensive and it's a blessing to have it offered right here at the church in the community."
Praise Church is one of just two Treasure Box locations in the valley. The other is Family World Harvest Church in North West Fresno. Both are signing up folks for pick up of monthly deliveries. You can order as many 30 dollar boxes as you can afford. Most of the food is frozen says Kevin Carlucci who coordinates the program at Praise Church, "Our goal is to reach out and help any individual, any family to supplement their grocery income."
No strings, no club fee says Pastor Person. Just a conduit to quality food at a lower cost. "A lot of people come to us with many requests to help them in this time of need and we thought it would be a fabulous opportunity to help families." He adds that Praise Church is also reaching out to other churches, non- profit organizations, and school groups to make them aware of this program, "It would have a greater impact to bring it to the whole community rather than a small group of people benefiting.
